Facial aging: how does our face age?

The natural aging of the face brings with it a series of changes that in some cases are difficult to stop. Aging is an issue that affects us all in different areas of our bodies. In this sense, we can say that the facial skin is one of the most affected areas by the passage of time.

The main facial changes due to aging are clearly identified by most people. As the face loses some of its elements, for example hairlines, an obvious aging process occurs. Among the most common changes, we have the following:

  • The Forehead Widening
  • The ears, losing their cartilage, lengthen
  • The nasal cartilage is weakened causing the nose to change its shape.
  • Fat is lost in various areas of the face, making these less uniform, sunken, loose and slightly rounded. This fat usually moves towards the lower area of the face, which is why bags can form in the jowls and neck.

We all age differently

There are multiple factors that influence the aging of people, which can be internal or external. The skin, for example, is one of the organs that undergoes the greatest changes with age due to its function and structure. The aging process is influenced by the person’s genetics. However, environmental effects, hormones and some mechanical factors can also accelerate or delay the signs of aging.

Some people age like one of their parents or grandparents did. Similarly, certain particular conditions take effect, for example, exposure to the sun or adverse weather conditions. In this same sense, we can point out that the movements of the face, like the gestures, contribute to making some signs of old age more evident.

Can I prevent the face from aging?

No matter how good our genes are at helping us to look younger, age-related changes to our faces are inevitable. Each sign of age in the facial area represents our traditions, lifestyle, health and moods. Celebrating our age despite the changes is the main recommendation.

However, it is very important to know the characteristics of the most recurrent changes in order to understand them and be able to prevent them. If we design a prevention strategy in time to delay the effects of aging, we can age in a healthy way. Some recommendations are as follows:

  • Use sun protection
  • Regularly apply moisturizing lotions and creams.
  • Take care of your diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and cigarettes
  • Include antioxidants in your diet.
  • Seek the guidance of a professional.

Faced with the main signs of old age, it is convenient to start intervening appropriately to prevent the development of diseases. Healthy habits contribute decisively to the prevention of the main pathological processes that could occur during old age.
